mivision Issue 36, Jun 2009

Last year, at the 2020 summit, Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, heralded the development of a bionic eye as the standout idea of the talkfest. A year later, he has followed through, by announcing the allocation of AUD$50 million to fund research into the bionic eye.

In this issue we examine the two main groups involved in such research in Australia, both vying for all or part of the money… and ask who will get what?

This month’s feature examines iridology as an alternative health tool… one that is shunned by most health professional bodies, but not all. Iridologists use the eye as a ‘health screening tool’ and in this issue we examine the foundations of the practice and method of examination used by iridologists. We also talk to both the sceptics and the supporters.

In the important world of business, expert Andrew Wilson answers the burning question on the minds of all business owners – how am I going to survive the current crisis? – in addition, Shirlaws founder Darren Shirlaw shows us where to find the opportunities during a time of economic recession and encourages businesses to thrive, especially those that are well structured.

Meanwhile, in an effort to try and stimulate our economy the Treasurer Wayne Swan gave a boost to small businesses when he handed down the Federal Budget on 12 May, by increasing the Small Business and General Business Tax Break from 30 per cent to “50 per cent for eligible assets ordered between December 2008 and December 2009”. We explain how to put your practice in a position of strength to differentiate from the competition and take advantage of this Government incentive.

In The Optometrist’s Practitioner- Patient Manual, Anthony J. Phillips discusses Glaucomatous Discs and how, with the range of armamentarium that the modern practitioner has at his or her disposal, this is now much easier.

In the world of fashion eyewear, we explore just what makes the cut as “the new black” this season as we preview the latest looks and trends in eyewear on display at Odmafair next month.

Former Australian cricketer and optometrist Geoff Lawson talks about anything other than optics, as he examines the recent decision by the Indian Premier League to move its 20/20 cricket circus to South Africa.

We also bring all the very latest news, as well as what’s new in technology and developments in both Australia and around the world

Enjoy this issue.
