Despite facing a weak world economy, the Mondial de l’Optique 2009 (World Optical Fair) saw Silmo 2009 succeed in staying on course and receiving high acclaim.
The threat of flu, smaller travel budgets and confusion over the new dates may have played a part in the drop in visitor numbers to 32,000, signalling a fall of 20 per cent. However, the exhibitors were able to appreciate the qualities of a trade show that is centred on fashion and style.
This year, there was a clear vintage and retro trend, with a dominant use of squarer shaped frames. There appeared to be a theme of extreme lightness, as well as the reappearance of metal frames after the popularity of acetate.
Winners of the 16th Silmo d’Or included Serengeti for the Lense category; Rolf for Frame Technological Innovation; Morel for Optic Frame and Rodenstock for Sunglasses.
