Organisers of Queensland Vision (QV) are expecting a big turnout for the expo at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9 to 11 April. This year’s program features lectures from six ophthalmologists, 20 optometrists/ academics and five other eye care specialists.
The meeting will be officially opened by Ms. Betty Churcher AO who was the first female Director of the National Gallery of Australia and who lost the vision in one eye with a melanoma and had threatened vision in the other by macular degeneration. She is a truly remarkable Australian with a motivational message to impart to optometrists.
World-renowned researcher Professor Hugh Taylor AC will also make an appearance at QV with his topic ‘Making trachoma history – how optometrists can help’. The motivation for his lecture is to stress to Australian delegates the importance of understanding that trachoma is still prevalent in the northern part of the continent and the part they can play in its eradication. This message will be of particular relevance to practitioners in the Northern Territory and North West Queensland and those who provide outreach services to remote, indigenous communities.
Alcon Australia is bringing Professor Lyndon Jones to QV. He will deliver five lectures and a small group elective during over the three-day event. Professor Jones is a professor at the School of Optometry and Associate Director of the Centre for Contact Lens Research at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada
The prestigious ‘Noel Verney Memorial Lecture’ will be delivered by Professor Nathan Efron who has chosen “Diabetes and the cornea: A new way of detecting peripheral neuropathy” as his topic. There will be 16 small group electives sponsored by Transitions, including subjects on foreign body removal and St. John Ambulance resuscitation certification.
There will be daily breakfast CPD sessions sponsored by Allergan, Alcon and Novartis; the Essilor Cocktail Party; CIBAVision gala dinner. A crèche is also available for children of delegates.
The Exhibition Hall will host more than 60 exhibitors, including new ones. To register for QV or to ask about accommodation, phone (AUS) 07 3839 4411 or go to www. optometrists.asn.au/queensland.
