Organisers of Mido, the international optics, optometry and ophthalmology show were upbeat about the three-day expo held in Milan last month.
According to the organisers: “the three day event boasted 42,000 visitors, more than 27 per cent up on last year’s numbers, for the first three days of the then four-day event.”
They said the event “far exceeded expectations in light of the world slump… (as)… retailers, distributors, suppliers and media reviewed new collections, technologies and education during the 40th anniversary of Mido.”
They say exhibitors described this year’s event as the best in many years, with first time exhibitors excited about the international contacts they made.
One of the long-standing exhibitors, the Hong Kong Association of Optical Manufacturers said: “We have been at Mido for the last thirty years or so; more than 50 per cent of our members are exhibiting here. Mido is truly an invaluable opportunity to meet with our buyers and suppliers”.
MIDO developed its own MIDO TV (www.eyesway.com, www.mido.com), which, for the first time, enabled the public to take part in the event. This innovation enabled all show attendees and exhibitors to re-experience the highlights of Mido. Interviews and news reports by the Mido TV staff illustrated the innovations presented, as well as opinions from business leaders and features with celebrities.
The Italian association of manufacturers of optical products (ANFAO) also told visitors and exhibitors that the world economic situation impacted Italian eyewear production in 2009, which was reported at 2,251 million Euros, a downturn of 13.3 per cent compared to the prior year, due to a decrease in exports, which account for some 85 per cent of Italian production.
Next year’s Mido will be held from 5 to 7 March, 2011.
