New Cairns Conference on Calendar

The Optometrists Association of Australia’s Queensland/Northern Territory division has announced a new eye health conference to be held in the tropical city of Cairns.

Titled ‘North Queensland Vision’, the conference will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from 11 to 13 June.

Organisers say the concept results from concern by the Board that practitioners in the north of Queensland and in the Northern Territory should be entitled to a significant accessible, annual CPD event.

Australian National University’s Associate Professor Michael Ibbotson will deliver his very first presentation to optometrists on the subject; ‘Developing a bionic eye in Australia’. Assoc. Prof. Ibbotson last month announced his team had developed a stimulating device that can be implanted in human and animal eyes from which electrodes can transmit electric signals to the optic nerve and onto the brain.

Also on the program are Ophthalmologists Drs Michael Forrest and Archie Lamb; academic Adjunct Professor Jan Lovie-Kitchin; GP and diabetes specialist Dr. Chrys Michaelides; optometrists Stephen Leslie and Liz Wason from WA and Queenslander David Stephensen.

The meeting also boasts a huge exhibition hall hosting Abbott Medical Services, Coopervision, Carl Zeiss, HICAPS, Investec Experien, Medfin, SpecSavers, Sunshades and Younger Optics.

The preliminary program is available at www.optometrists.asn.au/queensland and will be updated as new sponsors/exhibitors are added and topics resolved. Delegates can register at the web address or by phoning (AUS) 07 3839 4411.
