mivision Issue 47, Jun 2010

Welcome to the June issue.

June not only marks the halfway point of the year, but it’s also the official start of winter, the season of warm jackets, hot soups and doonas. When it comes to the world of optometry, ophthalmology and general eye care and wear, the hot issues continue unabated.

The Optometrists Association Australia (OAA) and the university-based schools of optometry have fought valiantly for optometrists to be granted therapeutic prescribing rights. Now that battle has been won in most Australian states… as final year optometry students, Ms Jingjing Huang and Ms Chloe Ko report in this issue of mivision.

Optometrist Jim Kokkininakis is an experienced optometrist and highly sought after international speaker, but he’s had to go back to school because the world of ocular therapeutics has changed so dramatically. Jim’s personal experience in returning to education is a must read.

In this issue, our business specialist John Lees imparts his wisdom and experience in the mibusiness section where he discusses how every optometric practice, large or small and every individual in a service role operates with a purpose. He breaks down that purpose into three parts to enhance your business.

In his popular and well-read column, Geoff Lawson takes a humorous look at optometry in the age of Facebook and coming to grips with the technological age and the burgeoning world of social networking media… and how it applies to optometry.

Yvonne Wu is a PhD candidate at the Brien Holden Vision Institute and School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of New South Wales (UNSW). Yvonne imparts her knowledge on the sight-threatening condition of microbial keratitis and how contact lens systems are essential, with studies showing that failure to maintain hygiene standards may result in contact lens related complications.

We also preview the latest campaign by the Eye Foundation, ‘julEYE’, which aims to focus community attention on getting an eye test in the month of July. The julEYE campaign is promoting public awareness of eye health and the dire need to have regular eye check-ups through a massive media and internet blitz. Eye health professionals around the country really need to get behind this important initiative.

As usual, we also bring you all the latest news and innovations in the world of eye care as well as the very latest in eye wear fashions and an interesting “Last Word” column on the pursuit of happiness.

Enjoy this issue.
