The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) has handed out its annual awards for excellence, recognising exceptional CERA staff and students.
RANZCO President Dr. Richard Stawell chaired the CERA Awards judging panel, presenting Research Fellow Dr. Mohamed Dirani of the Health Services Unit with the ‘Excellence in Research Award’. He was awarded an NHMRC Public Health Postdoctoral Fellowship and is a named co-investigator on a successful ARC Linkage grant.
Other award winners were:
‘Community Engagement and Knowledge Transfer’ went to Lauren Metcalfe who has doubled publicity for CERA across all media including TV and radio, setting up new social media channels, website improvements, and establishing a regular CERA segment on Vision Australia Radio.
‘Outstanding Contribution of a Student’ went to George Kong, a final year PhD student for his outstanding research on ‘The effect of aging and mitochondrial dysfunction on the optic nerve response to oxidative stress injury’.
‘The CERA Award’ went to The Corporate Services Team which has implemented a new IT system, and ‘Teaching and Training’ went to The Glaucoma Unit.
