Oakley Goes 3D

Oakley is the latest to jump on the 3D eyewear train with a special edition launch to celebrate the release of TRON: Legacy, the much-anticipated Disney 3D film due to open in cinemas in the United States this month (December).

The new ‘TRON’ Limited Edition 3D Gascan is accented with graphics that reflect the movie and comes with a custom designed, limited release micro-clear bag for lens cleaning and eyewear storage.

Oakley 3D eyewear features HDO-3D, a collection of proprietary lens innovations that Oakley claims have achieved the first optically correct 3D eyewear that virtually eliminates the ghosting or ‘crosstalk’ between images that reach each eye from one moment to the next.

Better optical clarity and greater curvature around the eyes for a wider field of view means the wearer can enjoy a wide field of sharp vision.

Oakley has also paid attention to comfort. The fit frame only makes contact at the sides of the head and bridge of the nose and doesn’t hook the ears

While Oakley 3D lenses were developed for use in cinemas that use passive polarisation the company is now pursuing partnerships with manufacturers of home 3D systems. While Oakley 3D glasses are optimized for indoor cinema applications, the technology in 3D polarisation is not ideal for normal daily outdoor use and will not provide the same level of performance as sunglasses.
