Millions of people suffer unnecessarily with itchy, gritty, watery eyes because they are either under diagnosed, under treated or self treated.
Dr. Leonard Bielory, from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, said for every one eye allergy medicine prescribed, 40 people self-medicate with over-the-counter eye medicine.
“These products may relieve the symptoms for a short time, but long-term, these patients need to see an allergist who can develop a complete treatment plan to eliminate the disease,” he said.
“The focus for people with allergies is usually their skin, lungs and nasal symptoms, Eyes can and deserve to be treated,” said Dr. Bielory.
