Environmentally sustainable eyewear is fast gaining a foothold in the market. U.S. based Modo’s Eco eyewear is produced using recycled metal and plastic.

The manufacturers claim it is the first consumer brand and eyewear collection to receive an Environmental Claims Validation from UL Environment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Underwriters Laboratories. The ULE validates that Eco’s frames are made from at least 95 per cent recycled stainless steel. In addition to using recycled inputs, Eco plants a tree for each of their frames sold and makes it easy to donate unused frames to people in need in developing countries.

Named one of the ‘Top 10 Green Entrepreneurs of 2010’ by CNBC, Ms. Oakes is an author, advisor, model and the co-founder of Source4Style.com, a site that enables designers and retailers to search for and source the world’s leading sustainable materials and services. She is considered ‘the world’s first eco-model’ for seamlessly combining her environmental expertise and vision with her modelling career.

“The collection ties together high-quality, responsible design, philanthropic giving and reforestation. These are all things I stand for,” said Ms. Oakes.
