The Australian Vision Convention 2011, held at Queensland’s Gold Coast (Friday 29 April to Sunday 1 May) achieved a record number of delegates with almost 800 optometrists registering, a 33 per cent increase from last year, largely due to compulsory professional education.

OAA QLD/NT Past President Mr. Brian M Carlton-Smith welcomed delegates from Queensland, interstate as well as New Zealand, Sarawak, Brunei, the United States, Canada and Japan.

Key speaker Dr. Mile Brujic from the Unites States, kicked off the educational program with a presentation entitled ‘Maximising contact lens wearing success’. He was followed by Dr. Ioanne Anderson with his presentation on facial nerve palsy and Professor Jan Lovie-Kitchin who presented on low vision and quality of life.

Innovations this year included dual stream plenary sessions, a “rapid fire” session to profile ground-breaking research and “growing business” sessions.

At the Essilor Cocktail Party, held on the Friday night, delegates were treated to an exclusive audience with The Queen, who found the time to visit her loyal subjects in Australia, just prior to wedding of her grandson William.
