30 September 2011: The world’s leading eye care and eyewear company Luxottica, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala celebration at its international base in Agordo, Italy on Saturday, 17 September, 2011.
Over 1,000 guests, including Luxottica employees from across the globe, descended on the small Italian town to pay tribute to both the company, as well as its founder, Leonardo Del Vecchio, who 50 years ago founded the company as a metal-worker turned spectacle maker.
Acknowledging the supreme influence of Mr Del Vecchio, Luxottica international CEO, Andrea Guerra, said, “Luxottica is one of only a few companies worldwide to celebrate a 50th anniversary in a single entrepreneurial generation, with our founder, who is still our president and major shareholder.”

Highlighting the festivities was Maestro Ennio Morricone who performed a private concert for attendees, while a short film dedicated to the history of Mr Del Vecchio and Luxottica by director and Oscar winner Gabriele Salvatores, was shown to guests. Eleonora Abbagnato, premiere danseuse of the French Opera in Paris, also performed on stage.
Luxottica’s Australia and New Zealand staff were also given the opportunity to attend the evening, thanks to the innovative LuX Factor competition.
Employees across each of Luxottica’s Australian and New Zealand brands, including OPSM and Sunglass Hut, were asked to dream up a ‘big idea’ to describe and showcase what excellent customer service meant to them. Those responsible for the 20 best ideas won a ‘golden ticket’ to take part in the 50th anniversary celebrations in Agordo, Italy.
Ideas were judged on how realistic they were, the impact they’d have on the business and the rationale for how they could be implemented. The lucky 20 winners (18 from Australia and two from New Zealand) have been blogging on Luxottica’s careers blog during their time away: http://luxottica.com.au/careers/
