John Nicola, the Managing Director of Optique Line is to compete in the 2012 Marathon Des Sables in April to raise much-needed funds for Optometry Giving Sight. This is in addition to Optique Line’s recent commitment to become a Silver Sponsor of OGS.
The gruelling six day, 250km endurance race across the sand dunes of the Sahara Desert has been described as The Toughest Footrace on Earth. Contestants must carry mandatory safety equipment, all food, a stove, anti-venom pump, clothing and sleeping gear in a back pack – approx 10kg of weight. The organisers supply water and an open-air tent for overnight camping at the end of each race day.
“We are extremely grateful to John for making this commitment and to Optique Line for becoming a sponsor of Optometry Giving Sight,” said Ron Baroni, Australian Country Manager for the charity.
“While the generous support of our sponsors allows us to do what we do every day, John can rest assured that 85 per cent of donations he raises will go directly to projects that help give the gift of vision to those in need,” he said.

With temperatures ranging through the mid 40C’s, this is no easy marathon to compete and John has been in intensive training for 12 months to ensure he is prepared. He averages 100km per week and has been competing in marathons including The Melbourne Marathon last October 2011 and the Marysville 50km Ultra in November 2011.
