mivision Issue 71, Aug 2012

Most of us know what we should be doing in terms of diet, exercise and lifestyle. Plenty of fruit, veggies and whole foods, limited amounts of processed and high-sugar foods, regular exercise and – of course – no smoking.

Sounds simple enough, but it’s a sure bet that most of your patients fall short of the perfect balance. “What’s it to do with me?” we hear you ask, “I’m an eye health professional, not a GP.”

Well, there’s a growing body of evidence that proves preventative nutrition is vital for ocular health. For some common eye problems, the right balance of dietary supplements can even be as effective as surgery.

Despite this, many eye health practitioners are reluctant to discuss diet and nutrition supplements with their patients. This month we run a special feature which summarises the latest research in this exciting area of ocular health, and provides a rundown on what is available in the burgeoning supplement market. As well as this, be sure to grab your Vitamin and Nutrition for the Eyes wall sheet – free with this issue of mivision.

We’ve met two remarkable men recently who we profile in this edition – both ophthalmologists, they’re proving their creative credentials while maintaining their day jobs. Dr. Brad Bowling’s writing flair caught the eye of the legendary Dr. Jack Kanski leading to an ongoing collaboration on a number of publications. Meanwhile, Dr. Wayne Birchall has turned his steady surgeon’s hand to painting, drawing inspiration from his cataract patients.

Speaking of creativity, flip forward to our fashion feature on next season’s summer sunglass collections. In an effort to try and bust out of the gloom of the financial stress gripping most of us, frame manufacturers are creating frames with a touch of brighter, bolder colour. And while vintage maintains its dominance, we’re seeing some innovative combinations of materials – with some of our favourite designers mixing metals with leathers and acetates.

As you know, mivision is committed to helping you, as an optical retail owner, build your business. In this edition, one of our regular contributors, Jim Papas, an optometrist who has won multiple awards for customer service and retail innovation, provides strategies to help you win the online contact lens war. We think you’ll find his advice more than useful.

We also have the latest eye care news from Australia and abroad, a rundown on what’s happening with your eye health professional association, new products to check out and, of course, we provide you with the chance to boost your CPD points. You can earn a total of four CPD points this issue. Read Dr. Con Moshegov’s article on phakic IOLs for the treatment of high myopia, and Dr. Jim Kokkinakis’ essay on new treatments for dry eye disease – then answer the questions at our online distance learning centre. Too easy!

Enjoy this issue.
