The cream of Australian and international society gathered at the Royal Hall of Industries last night (23 April) to celebrate the 50th Edition of the Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Awards.
The prestigious invitation only “multi-sensorial event” was hosted by brothers, Gildo and Paolo Zegna, who had flown in from Italy for the occasion. Australian model and actress Megan Gale MC’d the event, showcasing her expert grasp of the Italian language as well as her natural style and beauty.
Among the 2,000 guests were celebrities including TV personalities Jamie Durie, George Negus and Kerry-Anne Kennerley; Socceroos captain Lucas Neill; Voice compere Darren McMullen and Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth who was also in town to launch his latest movie Thor: The Dark World. Sitting in the front row of the audience was ousted labour minister Simon Crean, who laughed good naturedly when another member of the audience quipped that he should have been seated on the back bench.
Throughout the evening, models wearing the latest Zegna eyewear collection, paraded in luxurious suits designed by Zegna and hand made from the finest quality, Australian merino wool.
The gala evening and fashion show was the culmination of a series of celebrations that saw Australia’s top wool produces officially recognized and visits paid to some of the top Australian wool farms by the Zegna brothers. Zegna has been one of the biggest buyers of Australian superfine merino wool (18.5 microns and finer) since the 1920s.
