Victorian Optoms Take a Swing for OGS

More than 75 optometrists, members of the optical industry and friends joined together for the annual Victoria OAA Golf Day on March 18, to benefit Optometry Giving Sight.

David Ludowyk, who has organised the event for the past decade, said conditions were excellent, with the Yarra Yarra Golf Club having just finished their championships. The golf day was preceded by lunch and was followed by a two-course dinner.

“The course was in magnificent condition and it was a relaxing and fun day,” he said. “Dinner was superb; a huge thank-you to the sponsors for their donations to the raffle.”

David also expressed thanks to optometrists Peter Lewis, Peter Stewart and Norm Russo, as well as Laura Grattidge and Jenny Hall from Victoria OAA, for their help in making the day run smoothly.

“One of the highlights was Peter Lewis winning the overall trophy for the third time, being one of only a few to have ever done so!” said David.

Peter Lewis won with 37 points on a count back from Neville Turner, with Laurie Miller taking the runner up spot. Janet Ellis won the ladies competition with 32 points.

Ron Baroni, Australian country manager of Optometry Giving Sight, said the event is a highlight on the organisation’s calendar.

“We are so thankful for everyone who has helped make this yet another enjoyable and successful golf day,” he said.

“These events really make a difference, with the money raised going towards helping the more than 600 million people in the world who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam and glasses.”

Optometry Giving Sight guarantees that 85 percent of all donations go directly to sustainable eyecare projects. Since 2007, more than US$8 million in funding from donors and sponsors has been allocated or disbursed to 57 projects in 42 countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The Victoria OAA Golf Day raised close to AUD$7,000, including the raffle during dinner that raised AUD$1,800. Sponsors included Mimo, Optiqueline, Provision, Servicing Optics, BOC, Essilor (Silver), Rodenstock, Maui Jim, Rimoptics, Designs for Vision (Bronze), with prizes donated by Callaway Golf, the Yarra Yarra Golf Club and Mondottica.
