Speakers at the Masterclass Iv on Ocular Internal Examinations were Vision Eye Institute’s (VEI) Katherine Whittaker, Brisbane ophthalmologists Dr. Matt Russell and Dr. Frank Howes and Sydney ophthalmologist Dr. Simon Chen (all from VEI).
In her introduction, Ms. Whittaker discussed current optical coherence tomography methods and various retinal conditions.
Dr. Matthew Russell spoke on diabetic retinopathy and provided advice on grading the disease, when to refer patients and when a fluorescein angiogram is required. He went on to discuss the delivery of treatment for diabetic retinopathy with anti-VEGF intravitreal injections and vitrectomy surgery.
Dr. Frank Howes spoke on open angle glaucoma, current treatment options, including the best treatment options according to patient age and case management and the options for treating dry eye in glaucoma.
Dr. Simon Chen traveled from Sydney to present a “very practical clinical session” on posterior vitreous detachment. Dr. Chen’s presentation included information on penetrating injuries, myopia, Stickler’s Syndrome, Marfan’s Syndrome, migraine and neuralgiam pterygia in imaging and retinal detachment in children. Dr. Chen also spoke to delegates on the pertinent issue of how optometrists can cover themselves legally when working in the difficult area of posterior vitreous detachment.
