CCLSA Masterclass and AGM Success

Identifying and troubleshooting contact lens problems, fitting tips and guides for all sorts of contact lenses were the key topics of discussion at the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia Masterclass at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth mid -August.

David Stephensen presented updates on evaporative dry eye, new evidence on managing contact lens discomfort and gave tips for new aspiring RGP contact lens fitters, extracting the most out of corneal topography and advanced contact lens fitting for presbyopes.

Margaret Lam gave an inspiring talk on building a contact lens practice as well as an overview on the latest innovations in contact lenses. Luke Arundel demonstrated how to master miniscleral contact lens fittings and how to use therapeutics optimally in contact lens cases with complications and challenges. Jessica Chi gave an advanced run down on the ‘how tos’ of mastering contact fitting for astigmats.

Sponsors showcased the science behind their products and innovations; including Steve Newman from Menicon who described the science behind the innovative flat packaging of the Miru flat pack daily contact lens; Adrien Piekarski from AMO who launched Blink Intensive Tears Plus and Blink Lid-wipes to the Australian market, and Joe Tanner from CooperVision and Karen Fowler from Alcon who presented their new daily disposable lenses, CooperVision MyDay and Alcon Dailies Total1. Alcon gave a sneak preview of the AirOptix Colourblends, expected to arrive on the market in the near future.

At a dinner for members of the Society, ophthalmologist Dr. Andrea Ang presented on new surgical techniques for keratoconus.

At the CCLSA AGM, outgoing National President Heath Davis handed over to Jessica Chi of Victoria and three new state presidents were welcomed: Margaret Lam from New South Wales, Eric Cheng from Western Australia and Lee Baumwol from Tasmania. Stephen Giacon from Victoria was inducted as the national first Vice President and Damien Fisher from Queensland as the national second Vice President.

CCLSA thanked the sponsors and presenters at the Perth Masterclass, in particular David Stephensen, Dorothy Carlborg and Damon Ezekiel.

The 2015 International Cornea and Contact Lens Congress (ICCLC) will be held at Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast in Queensland from 22 – 24 May 2015.

Jessica Chi obtained her Bachelor of Optometry Degree from the University of Melbourne in 2007. Her particular interest in optometry has always been in the field of contact lenses. Jessica spent several years working at Richard Lindsay and Associates, one of the leading contact lens practices in Australia. She frequently prescribes contact lenses for a range of conditions including keratoconus post-graft, ocular trauma, and paedatric aphakia, using all types of contact lenses including RGP lenses, hybrid contact lenses, mini-scleral contact lenses and ortho-keratology. She has spoken at conferences and meetings throughout Australia and aside from her involvement in the Cornea and Contact Lens Society she has been heavily involved in professional development and has served on the continuing education committee for the Australian College of Optometry and the Therapeutics Advisory Board for the Optometry Association of Australia.
