SKUGGA: Sunnies with Variable Electronic Tint

Award winning Swedish designers who have come up with sunglasses with variable electronic tint control have turned to Kickstarter to crowdfund so they can take their concept to the next level.

SKUGGA sunglasses use an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the tint to the wearer’s current environment. The tint can be further adjusted manually with the swipe of the SKUGGA-app and there’s a daily log for those who like to monitor their UV exposure. The frames have been developed “for the possibility of integrating prescription lenses”.

According to the innovators, “the tint functionality in SKUGGA Eyewear is made possible with sophisticated liquid crystal (LC) technology from the Swedish company LC-Tec. Their electrically controlled switchable filters are highly suitable for use as tint technology. A low voltage applied to the filter defines the amount of light that is passed through it, and the amount of tint can be changed from one level to another within a few milliseconds… In comparison to photochromic glasses, that adjust the tint depending on the UV-light, SKUGGA can be used while the light but not the UV exposure is the actual issue…. Moreover, SKUGGA adjusts the tint way faster and can give you a darker tint.”
