Baloji’s Mujinga and the Kitoko

Baloji + Komono is a Belgian sunglasses capsule collection designed by the poet, musician, actor and artist Baloji and launched by watch and sunglass brand Komono.

The malachite acetate used for these sunglasses is exclusively developed by Komono. All styles feature scratch resistant CR39 lenses with UV 400 protection, gold plated stainless steel details, and heat mouldable temples. There are four styles in the collection.

Pictured here is Kitoko – an over-sized frame inspired by 80s hip hop, and above all the glasses worn by Baudouin 1, the Belgian king from 1951 – 1993. Baudouin 1 was nick-named Mwana Kitoko, which translates as ‘beautiful white man’ or ‘handsome young man’ in Lingala, a Bantu language spoken in parts of the Congo (Baloji is critically acclaimed for his modern interpretation of Congolese music).

Also pictured is Mujinga, a cat’s eye frame that is a tribute to Baloji’s mother.
