Richard Grills, founder of Designs for Vision, has been awarded the Distinguished Services Certificate from RANZCO NSW. Dr. Alok Sharma presented the award to Mr. Grills at the RANZCO NSW Congress dinner in the Hunter Valley in March.

Referring to him as “an unsung hero” he described Mr. Grill’s significant contribution to ophthalmology over 58 years. He has taught ophthalmic optics to students of ophthalmology, orthoptics, ophthalmic nursing and optical dispensing for 40 years; was the founder and managing director of one of the first and leading instrument companies, Designs for Vision from 1978 to 2012 (and is now a consultant for the company) and is a board member of Macular Disease Foundation Australia; Genetic Eye Foundation; Essilor Vision Foundation (chairman); Optical Distributors and Manufacturers Association; National Ophthalmic Suppliers Association. Mr. Grills is a visiting committee member of UNSW Optometry School; UTS Orthoptics School; and USyd Keratoconus Registry.

From 1966 to 1974, Mr. Grills conducted low vision clinics in Sydney and NSW country locations. Through Designs for Vision, he contributed to college research, scholarships and various charitable projects.

In a message read to the audience, Clinical Associate Professor Ivan Goldberg said of Mr. Grills, “You have been a consistent beacon of encouragement, a font of wise advice and guidance and a genuine friend to me and to so many others over several decades… You are one of the most decent and honourable gentlemen I have ever met”.
