Social enterprise, oDocs Eye Care has launched its next generation ophthalmoscope, oDocs nun, a wide field ophthalmoscope capable of both mydriatic and nonmydriatic retinal imaging. According to oDocs, the lens system yields a 40 degree field of view (FOV) in fully dilated eyes and 15 degree FOV in undilated eyes.
The portable nun can be used as a hand held ophthalmoscope or in conjunction with a broad range of smartphones running on the iOS and Android platforms. There is no app required to run the ophthalmoscope and there are no service fees.
oDocs Eye Care was established in New Zealand by Dr. Hong Sheng Chiong, who said the nun has been designed to replace outdated technology. “The direct ophthalmoscope was invented 160 years ago, the optics remain the same, no wonder many physicians struggle with it… it is time for a complete upgrade,” he said.
The nun is CE marked as a class 1 medical device and registered with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and MedSafe.
