It’s hard to believe this is the final issue of mivision for 2018. Following the success of our myopia issue last December, we have once again turned our attention to what is now commonly referred to as “a global epidemic”.
We were honoured to have Professor David Mackey, Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Western Australia and Managing Director at the Lions Eye Institute (LEI), take on the role of guest editor for this issue. Prof. Mackey’s outstanding contribution to research has received ongoing national and international recognition.
Recently he announced he will step down as Managing Director of the LEI at the end of February 2019 to focus on five funded research projects into the genetics of eye disease. Prof. Mackey has been awarded a Practitioner Fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to discover new genes responsible for glaucoma and myopia. He is also leading research funded with an AU$9.4 million NHMRC program grant – the largest ever awarded for eye research. I look forward to publishing news on his progress in future issues of mivision.
I thank Prof. Mackey and his team, along with researchers from Flinders University, Brien Holden Vision Institute and practitioners from private optometry (including last year’s guest editor Dr. Kate Gifford), for their contributions to the myopia issue.
As we wrap up for the year, I’d like to thank all the supporters of mivision. We are fortunate to have many amazing contributors who generously share their knowledge and experience for the benefit of the eye health profession and the community at large. Thank you also to our advertisers who enable mivision to be published, and our readers for your continued support.
It’s been a year of enormous change and growth for mivision. The journal is running at capacity, our CPD offering has been expanded with video content and we have launched a new website. We’ve also experienced a change in our company’s ownership. Yet thanks to the dedication and consistent efforts of our team – Todd, Nikki, Simon, Kirsten and Emily – mivision continues to be delivered to readers in Australia and New Zealand on time, every month.
