ACBO Changes Membership Structure

The Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (ACBO) – the peak body for behavioural optometrists in the Australasian region with close to 400 members – has developed a new entry level online course. The course introduces optometrists to the principles and concepts that underpin the science and practice of behavioural optometry and will be delivered in four modules by ACBO Fellow and eminent optometrist, Adrian Bell.

Entitled Every Patient, Every Day, the course is suitable for:

  • optometrists interested in children’s vision,
  • optometrists just starting out in behavioural optometry, and
  • experienced practitioners looking for extra tips and clinical pearls. CPD Points are available for completion of the program.
Changes to Membership

Recently the ACBO Executive Board made changes to membership criteria to include an education requirement for optometrists wishing to join. Registered optometrists in Australia, New Zealand, and other countries can join ACBO as provisional members. Full membership with associated member benefits is only achieved once the Every Patient, Every Day course has been completed and the associated examination requirements achieved.

According to the ACBO Board, “it is very important for optometrists to be constantly improving practice standards, and that at least a minimum education standard is required for practice in an area of special interest”.
