A continued professional development (CPD) webinar on Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) Optics and its application to presbyopia and myopia control is available for eye health professionals to view at mieducation.com.
The webinar, titled Extended Depth of Focus Optics for CLs: The Philosophy and Technology, is presented by Professor Arthur Ho, Chief Scientist Innovation Officer at Brien Holden Vision Institute. Prof Ho is familiar to, and highly respected by, many optometrists, having worked with students since the early 90s in areas such as understanding the optics of the eye, designing instrumentation, understanding the clinical aspects of the instrumentation and statistical analysis.
Now soft contact lenses with EDOF optics are available for commercial use
In the webinar he discusses EDOF optical technologies, how they differ from standard multifocal optics and the rationale for their application to presbyopia and myopia control. A total of three CPD points have been applied for, for viewing the webinar and completing the accompanying assessment questions.
WHY EDOF FOR CLS
Traditional soft multifocal contact lenses are designed to image distance, intermediate and near light on the retina at the same time. Many optical principles and designs have been used for presbyopic correction including aspheric optics, concentric optics and several alternating annular zones.
While EDOF optics have been successfully applied to IOL designs for some time to elongate depth of focus, until recently, the same technology had not been applied to contact lenses. Now soft contact lenses with EDOF optics are available for commercial use, providing presbyopic patients with clearer vision over distance, intermediate and near distances. Additionally, this innovative technology has been shown to be an effective treatment for myopia control.
