SurgiVision Expands Portfolio and Team

SurgiVision has cemented a foothold in the ophthalmic surgery market just eight months after being established by Damian O’Connell, and despite rolling lockdowns across the country disrupting delivery of eye care.

SurgiVision first entered the market in April 2021, having been appointed the exclusive distributor for Medicontur, 1stQ in Australia and New Zealand and for Surgistar in Australia. Most recently the company gained distribution rights to Albomed Pe-Ha Guard HPMC 2.0% corneal lubricant and a wide range of costeffective, high quality, reusable stainless steel and titanium instruments.

Mr O’Connell said the latest additions complement the original portfolio and will be supported by strong customer service delivered by his expanding team.

“We recently appointed Jaco Johan (JJ) Nel to the role of Territory Manager for Queensland and the Northern Territory. JJ is very experienced in the ophthalmology and optometry industry with over 23 years of clinical, sales and management experience. Having previously worked at Ivantis and Device Technologies, he is known in the state by many of our customers. It’s great to have him on-board,” said Mr O’Connell.

Mr O’Connell said his company has received positive feedback on the new products. “Albomed Pe-Ha Guard HPMC 2.0% has been particularly well received because it is easy to use and highly effective in protecting the corneal epithelium following anaesthesia and during ophthalmic procedures such as cataract surgery.”

Indeed, Sydney ophthalmologist Dr Alison Chiu said she routinely uses the corneal lubricant during cataract, refractive lens extraction and implantable collamer lens surgeries.

“If patients are receiving an eye block for their surgery, I also have my anaesthetist instil a few drops of this product immediately after administering the block. This has made a big difference to the clarity of the corneas during my cases which helps with optimising the surgical view,” said Dr Chiu.

“I have found that using Albomed Pe-Ha Guard also has resulted in great workflow efficiency as it frees up the scrub nurse from frequently applying BSS (ophthalmic irrigation) intraoperatively. Post-operatively, I have noted improved patient comfort as it significantly reduces dry eye issues/corneal epithelium issues after surgery.”

Dr Chiu added, “Albomed Pe-Ha Guard also helps with ensuring high patient satisfaction and achieving precise outcomes in the early postoperative period – particularly with multifocal intraocular lens patients.”

SurgiVision’s comprehensive portfolio now comprises Medicontur Bi-Flex posterior chamber intraocular lenses in monofocal, monofocal toric (includes custom made lenses with up to 24.0D cyl), trifocal and trifocal toric models; 1stQ AddOn secondary supplementary sulcus lenses which are rotationally stable in the sulcus and include monofocal, monofocal toric, trifocal and trifocal toric options; Medicontur Jetring preloaded capsular tension rings; Surgistar blades, cannulae, corneal trephines (vacuum and non-vacuum), irrigation/aspiration devices, and accessories; Albomed Pe-Ha Guard HPMC 2.0% corneal lubricant, Albomed viscoelastics, and a wide range of reusable stainless steel and titanium instruments.
