Mark Carmichael to Drive Vision for RANZCO

Mark Carmichael has commenced as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

Mr Carmichael joined the College from the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) where he was CEO for a decade. Prior to that, he was CEO of the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeons (ASOHNS) for five years.

Speaking with mivision, Mr Carmichael said as CEO of RANZCO he will draw on extensive advocacy experience gained during his time at ASA, along with experience directing vocational training while at ASOHNS.

“I’m looking forward to working with the team at RANZCO and the Board. The College’s 2030 vision is an exceedingly important aspect of its work and I’m keen to understand its implementation in the community.

“Resuming effective vocational training post COVID disruptions is another area of importance, as is getting to understand the business that is RANZCO – including all the issues of running a large medical college that spans two jurisdictions – I am very conscious of the needs of our members in New Zealand.”

Mr Carmichael holds a Bachelor of Health Science – Physical Education from the University of Western Australia and a Masters in Business Management from the University of Technology, Sydney.

He replaces Dr David Andrews who served nine years in the role, since 2013. Dr Andrews has been appointed CEO of the Australian Veterinary Association.
