Free CPD For Orthoptists: AMD and Diabetic Eye Disease

Orthoptists are invited to complete new CPD developed by some of Australia’s leading retinal specialists and Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA).

World-renowned ophthalmologist Professor Paul Mitchell AO and other experts have helped co-develop these courses on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease (DED).

Each AOB-accredited course is made up of two self-paced 30-minute modules and two 15-minute quizze

The Australian Orthoptic Board has accredited each course for four CPD points (AOB-accredited activity #23087).

Customised for Orthoptists

More than 1.4 million Australians have some evidence of AMD – this country’s leading cause of blindness – while 300-400,000 live with diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of preventable blindness in the working-age population.

Orthoptists play a vital role in assessing and managing eye conditions, and represent a crucial part of the solution to reduce vision loss in Australia.

Reflecting the latest standards of care and customised specifically for orthoptists, these courses are designed to help you better diagnose and treat AMD and diabetic eye disease, and ultimately deliver improved outcomes for your patients.

Each AOB-accredited course is made up of two self-paced 30-minute modules and two 15-minute quizzes.

You’ll learn best-practice strategies to recognise high-risk individuals then encourage them to have regular eye examinations, as well as how to link patients diagnosed with macular disease to supports and services.

This CPD has been funded by the Federal Government as a result of the National Strategic Action Plan for Macular Disease.

The courses aim to provide quality education at no charge to healthcare practitioners, and have been developed in collaboration with the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Ophthalmology (RANZCO), Orthoptics Australia and a host of consortium partners.

Tailoring the content to the needs of different professions, MDFA released CPD for optometrists in 2021, before launching these courses for orthoptists. CPD for GPs and pharmacists will be available in 2022.

Positive Feedback

The CPD has earned positive feedback from the optometrists who’ve already completed it.

“The course was informative and engaging. Very easy to follow,” one optometrist wrote in the post-course survey.

Another wrote: “Loved it. Very interactive and interesting. Fun and easy to follow.”

You can take the new orthoptist courses today through MDFA’s website or Orthoptics Australia’s website
