ACO’s Therapeutic Refresher Course Returns

The Australian College of Optometry’s (ACO) Therapeutic Refresher Course will return after a two-year hiatus due to COVID.

Taking place on Sunday, 2 October, the in-person event will provide optometrists with over half of their required 10 hours of therapeutics CPD and 6.75T CPD points, including three interactive points.

The course is ideal for therapeutically endorsed optometrists who want to further their expertise in oral and topical therapeutics

The course is ideal for therapeutically endorsed optometrists who want to further their expertise in oral and topical therapeutics and gain practical insights into the contemporary management of keratoconus, myopia, and uveitis.

Oral Therapeutics a Focus

As optometrists play an ever-growing role in the therapeutic management of ocular disease, it is important to consider the appropriate context and use of both topical and oral medications in optometric practice. As such, this comprehensive course has a strong focus on the next frontier of optometry: optometry’s role in oral therapeutics, with a session on ocular therapeutics designed to provide candidates with relevant theory to enhance their patient care together with interactive case study analysis.

Myopia Control

The incidence of myopia is reaching epidemic proportions. As its incidence continues to increase rapidly, so too are the challenges of managing both paediatric and adult myopic patients. The growing role of topical cycloplegics in managing myopia as well as other paediatric conditions will be discussed, alongside the difficulties of diagnosing and managing glaucoma in adult myopes.

Anterior Uveitis

Anterior uveitis is one of the most common types of ocular inflammation encountered by primary eye care clinicians. The ACO’s refresher on managing inflammation of the anterior segment will increase attendees’ confidence in managing these patients.

Five Lecture Program

Sponsored by Good Optical Services, the curated five lecture program will be delivered by leading eye care professionals to ensure participants get the most out of this refresher:

  • Oral Prescribing for Optometrists, delivered by Associate Professor Mark Roth
  • The Growing Role of Cycloplegics in Paediatric Optometry, delivered by Elisse Higginbotham
  • Corneal Ectasis and Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking Update, delivered by Dr Nathan Wong
