Myopia Pledge

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) is urging optometrists across the globe to join the Myopia Management Standard of Care Pledge challenge.

So far more than 40 global eye care organisations and more than 25,000 individuals have taken the pledge by signing on the WCO website.

… more than 40 global eye care organisations and more than 25,000 individuals have taken the pledge

Since the WCO introduced its myopia management Standard of Care resolution in 2021, it has been asking optometrists to make it an integral part of their practices.

The standard of care is comprised of three main components – mitigation, measurement, and management. Research has shown that actively managing myopia in childhood can slow onset and progression and prevent serious conditions such as retinal detachment and glaucoma in adulthood.

WCO President-elect Dr Sandra Block said myopia has reached epidemic levels.

“Taking the pledge sends a clear message that organisations and practitioners understand the seriousness of myopia as a public health threat and that they are taking active measures to manage that threat.”

You can learn more and take the pledge. The site also contains practical tools and information for optometrists on in myopia management.
