Dr Tim Grant, Head of Asia Professional Education and Development, has decided to step away from Alcon after 31 years of service.
Dr Grant’s career with Alcon/CIBA Vision began in Switzerland in 1991, where he held the position of Head, Global Clinical Affairs During this time, he published papers resulting from clinical trials managed across Europe and Asia.
He moved on to become Executive Director of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs and Deputy Leader for the SEE3 project, which was tasked with developing, manufacturing, and obtaining approval to market the world’s first Silicone Hydrogel contact lens in 1998 (Focus Night & Day) with an indication for 30 days and nights of continuous wear. This was no small feat as with the launch of this lens, the world of contact lenses changed forever. During this time Dr Grant was granted a manufacturing patent.
In 2000, Dr Grant became CIBA Vision ANZ General Manager, and in addition was responsible for launching Focus Night & Day throughout Asia. He returned to Switzerland in 2002 to join the International Distributor Market team as Business Manager for North Africa and the Balkans with the additional responsibility of launching Focus Night & Day in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
In 2004 he moved to Singapore to establish the first CIBA Vision regional office in Asia, together with 2 other associates. The current Alcon regional office in Singapore is a continuation of this effort. While in Singapore he managed the Asia Distributor Markets of China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam.
Education and Development
Most recently Dr Grant has been leading the Asia Professional Education and Development team, having a strong impact on the Alcon organisation far beyond Asia. Not only did he continue using his business and technical skills to educate ECPs about Alcon product innovations, he was a member of several global teams and was also highly committed to developing and coaching his fellow Professional Education associates locally, regionally and globally. He is well known throughout Asia having interactions with teaching institutes and Eye Care Professionals in the region via congresses and visits to their practices.
The Alcon Asia Professional Education team is set for success, thanks to Dr Grant’s many contributions mentoring and leading an outstanding group of professionals. In recognition for his 31 years of service and commitment to leadership Alcon ANZ has named an annual performance award in his honour.
Next Steps
As Dr Grant moves to the next phase of his career, he has been appointed as Advisory Board Chair for the Centres of Research Excellence at UNSW. He intends to continue using his technical, management and business skills with Advisory and Board assignments as well as consulting projects.
