Patients with dry eye disease are invited to learn about the latest developments in treating dry eye and improving outcomes at a free webinar, hosted by Save Sight Institute, The University of Sydney.
Dry eye disease (DED) affects one in five people worldwide and is considered a growing public health concern due to its impact on quality of life. With increasing exposure to risk factors including contact lenses, screen view or use of digital devices, and other environmental factors (e.g., humidity, pollution, climate changes), the incidence of dry eye continues to rise. Despite the availability of multiple clinical therapies, devices and surgical procedures developed for dry eye, only a few have been evaluated using patient reported outcome measure.

Professor Stephanie Watson OAM
Professor Stephanie Watson OAM
Professor Stephanie Watson OAM is the Head of Corneal Research Group at the Save Sight Institute and Head, Corneal Unit at Sydney Eye Hospital, the Chief investigator of the Save Sight Dry Eye Registry project, Chair of the Australian Vision Research, and Co-Deputy Director, Industry, Innovation and Commercialisation, Sydney Nano Institute. Professor Watson will Chair the webinar and highlight ground-breaking research from the Save Sight Dry Eye Registry.
Scientia Professor Fiona Stapleton
Scientia Professor Fiona Stapleton
Scientia Professor Fiona Stapleton, from the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW Sydney is a clinician scientist with clinical and research interests in dry eye and the ocular surface. She has participated as a steering committee member in the TFOS DEWS II and Lifestyle Challenges workshops. Professor Stapleton will present on the “Recent updates in dry eye: what patients need to know, treatment options and latest research”.
Dr Himal Kandel
Dr. Himal Kandel
Dr Himal Kandel is a Kornhauser Research Fellow working at the Save Sight Institute, University of Sydney. His expertise and special interests include patient-reported quality-of-life research. He has published over 65 papers in highly-ranked journals, which have made a significant impact on the scientific community in understanding patient outcomes. Dr Kandel has received several awards, including the Flinders University Vice Chancellor’s Prize for Doctoral Thesis Excellence and Flinders University Alumni Award, in recognition of his contributions to the field. Dr Himal will present on “Patient reported outcomes in dry eye”.
Dr Ngozi Chidi-Egboka
Dr. Ngozi Chidi-Egboka
Dr Ngozi Chidi-Egboka is a Research Associate working on the Save Sight Dry Eye Registry at the University of Sydney. She recently completed her PhD at UNSW Sydney on dry eye and ocular surface research. She is a recipient of several higher degree research awards including 2022 UNSW Dean’s Excellent Thesis Award, UNSW Medicine and Health Brian Kirby Prize for Research Excellence in Optometry, and 2019-2020 Dorothy Carlborg Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia award. She serves as a committee member in the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and an author in the Cochrane Eyes and Vision. Dr Chidi-Egboka will speak on “the benefits of the dry eye registry from the patient perspective”.

Ms Janian works in the Advancement Portfolio at the University of Sydney where she with alumni and the broader community through a wide range of communications, events and engagement programs. She is responsible for working closely with people who wish to philanthropically support the Save Sight Institute’s research and education initiatives.
Dr Maria Cabrera Aguas
Dr. Maria Cabrera Aguas
Dr Maria Cabrera-Aguas is a Research Associate at the Corneal Research Group at the University of Sydney-Save Sight Institute. She is a medical doctor with a Master of International Public Health, and a PhD on the development, implementation and evaluation of treatment guidelines for herpes simplex keratitis at Sydney Eye Hospital. She coordinates the Bacterial Ocular Surveillance System to monitor antimicrobial resistance across Australia. She is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and The Public Health Association of Australia. Dr Cabrera-Aguas created the Sydney Eye Podcast to talk about the prevention and treatment of eye conditions. She will coordinate the sessions during the webinar.
