mivision Issue 200 May 2024

Welcome to the 200th issue of mivision.

As a team we are extremely proud to have become a leading publisher of news, research, and continued professional development for the ophthalmic profession in Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

And we are humbled by the many hundreds of optometrists, ophthalmologists, academics, and industry members who contribute articles so that we can pursue our mission to enhance the patient pathway and influence optimum patient outcomes by sharing knowledge.

Personally, I would like to congratulate mivision’s founders Todd Tai and Mark Cushway. Without their vision back in 2006 we would not be here today. Our first issue – April 2006 – was a mere 44 pages. Ian Hay was the editor, and our contributors were Peter Larsen, Jim Kokkinakis, John Adam, Sharon Smith, and Jacqui Attard.

Our 200th issue comprises 128 pages with nine ophthalmologists, six optometrists and 10 industry influencers contributing articles. Alongside our printed issue, we have a strong online presence with web, e-news, and two digital versions of the publication, as well as a growing videography business.

Our first story back in April 2006, titled ‘Keeping an eye on broccoli’, was about dietary supplements containing lutein and zeaxanthin for eye health. This is a coincidence because in this issue, which is focussed on macular disease, we have a CPD article on new guidelines for nutrition released by Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA). Our understanding of the role that diet and supplements play in all aspects of eye health has progressed enormously since 2006, as you’ll see in this article that begins on page 59.

Thank you to MDFA for assistance in producing this issue of mivision and for the work the organisation does to support health care professionals and members of the community who live with a macular disease.

And a massive thank you to our small but nimble and collaborative team that works so closely to keep mivision alive: Nikki, Maren, Michelle, Simon, Kirsten, Dione, Dean, Daisy, Kasimir and, of course, our publisher Todd.

Enjoy #200!
