$6.8 Million Expansion to Victoria’s Glasses for Kids Program

The Victorian government will expand the state’s Glasses for Kids program with an injection AU$6.8 million over the next three years.

Optometry Victoria South Australia (OV/SA) has welcomed the announcement,  which was part of the 2024–25 Victorian budget, describing it as a “demonstration of the Victorian government’s commitment to addressing the crucial issue of children’s eye health and access to vision care services”.

“We applaud the Victorian government for prioritising children’s eye care and recognising the importance of ensuring children have access to regular eye care,” said Timothy Lo, President of OV/SA.

“Children’s vision and eye health can significantly impact their wellbeing and development, and too often issues go unaddressed. We need to be doing more to ensure all kids have regular eye examinations throughout childhood. This funding boost represents a step in the right direction towards achieving that goal.”

With the looming epidemic of myopia, OV/SA said “it’s never been more important to focus on enhancing children’s access to regular, quality eye care”.

“Optometrists play a critical role in protecting and promoting children’s vision and eye health, including managing myopia. OV/SA’s vision is one of proactive eye health, where every Australian is aware of the benefits of outdoor light to the development of children’s eyesight and every Victorian family has access to the eye and vision care that child needs,” the Association said.
