We’ve had a lot of fun putting together the latest issue of mivision; talking to some ophthalmologists and optometrists who, even in the face of a challenging economic environment, are making significant investments in their practice.
Drs Erica Darian-Smith and Mitchell Lee in Sydney, and optical dispensers Yanis and Marjan Lazarev in Perth, are brave, smart and single-minded in their commitment to build businesses with a point of difference. If you’re considering doing the same, I’d recommend you devour their stories. There are plenty of ideas, tips and tricks – some ‘outside the box – to get you on the right path.
Also this month, my colleague Michelle Hauschild was fortunate enough to sit down with Dr Shanel Sharma to find out about her work with cricketing bodies, dermatologists, and sports physicians, to increase awareness of UV-related eye disease among cricketers. As Dr Sharma noted, much has been done to ensure awareness about the dangers of skin exposure to sun, but ocular health has been neglected. This is something that needs to be addressed with elite cricketers and the broader cricketing community alike.
Elsewhere in the issue we have a diversity of articles, ranging from neuro-ophthalmology to epithelial mapping, best-selling eyewear, and how to navigate the complex world of private health insurance rebates. And, with National Mental Health Week running from 7–14 October in Australia, and World Mental Health Day falling on 10 October, we have a fascinating CPD article discussing the association between dry eye and depression and how you, as clinicians, can assist these patients.
