ACO Launches 2025 Certificate Courses

The Australian College of Optometry (ACO) has launched its certificate courses for 2025 to support the needs of practising optometrists.

Developed in collaboration with industry leaders, the certificates provide optometry professionals with evidence-led knowledge and practical insights to enhance their practice and improve patient outcomes.

Registrations are now open for the following courses:

  • Advanced Certificate in Children’s Vision, commencing 10 February 2025
  • Advanced Certificate in Glaucoma, commencing 17 March 2025
  • Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics, commencing 14 April 2025
  • Certificate in Advanced Contact Lenses, commencing 28 April 2025, and
  • Certificate in Public Health and Leadership in Eye Care, commencing 2 June 2025

Each course blends evidence-based content with remote learning, including a mix of pre-recorded lectures, live webinars, and peer discussion.

ACO said the courses are delivered by leading experts and participants are sure to gain “practical, actionable skills to elevate their practice”.

“We are proud to offer programs that not only expand clinical expertise but also empower optometrists to provide more comprehensive and impactful care to their patients,” said Shazia Tahseen, ACO Education Manager.

Clinical Placements

Ms Tahseen said a standout feature of ACO’s certificate courses is the inclusion of local, hands-on clinical placements.

“We’ve found that as more optometrists are looking to upskill, they are paying particular attention to the level of their practical skills. The opportunity to gain that hands-on experience as part of an ACO certificate is simply irreplaceable,” she explained.

“Many candidates complete their placements with their local ophthalmologist, which provides a unique learning opportunity and chance to make deeper a connection than their existing referring relationship.”

Anthony Wong, graduate of the ACO’s Advanced Certificate in Glaucoma had such an experience.

“My great working relationship with our local ophthalmologists was only enhanced by spending time with them in their clinics. Without fail, they were encouraging, willing to share their knowledge and discuss individual cases.

“Through [the] placement, I gained valuable insight into how glaucoma is managed by ophthalmologists. This experience has made me more assertive in co-managing glaucoma patients and better equipped to collaborate when changes to management are needed.”

Registrations for ACO’s 2025 certificates are now open and further information is available on the ACO website.
