As the global focus on myopia prevention and management continues to intensify, so does the demand for correctly fitted kids’ optical frames. STEPPER EYEWEAR, renowned for its precision-engineered adult frames since 1970, has partnered with leading dispensing optician Alicia Thompson to create STEPPER Start – a collection that prioritises clinical efficacy, comfort, and style in equal measure.
STEPPER EYEWEAR’s journey into children’s eyewear began in Asia, focussing on frames for regions with high myopia prevalence. However, the myopia management revolution, with innovations such as HOYA’s MiyoSmart lenses, prompted STEPPER EYEWEAR to revisit its approach on a global scale.
“The advent of myopia management lenses aligns with and underscores our belief that achieving the perfect fit is of paramount importance,” explained Peter Reeve, Director on the STEPPER EYEWEAR management board. “When we presented our children’s range in the UK, our approach to kids’ eyewear was validated, but we discovered how new research could further enhance our designs.”
A Reality Check
When the initial collection was presented to Dr Alicia Thompson, Director of Education, Research and Professional Development at Association of the British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO), her critique was clear: “better than most”; however, by using her research they could be considerably improved.
Dr Thompson, whose doctoral research at Aston University focusses on paediatric facial anthropometry, provided data-driven insights that changed everything. It was then that STEPPER EYEWEAR made the bold decision to create children’s frames based on her data.
“Fortunately, with our flat management structure, we could deliver the new designs at great speed,” said Mr Reeve.
The Science of Fit
Dr Thompson’s groundbreaking research, made open source for the benefit of the industry, highlighted critical measurements such as crest height, apical radius, splay angle, and temple width. This data informed every element of STEPPER Start’s design.
“We believe everything starts with the bridge,” explained Mr Reeve. “Once you understand the basics, you can use lightweight materials like our TX5 and titanium to enhance comfort and fit.”
Correctly fitted frames are essential for proper lens positioning, especially with myopia management lenses.
Professional Fitting Over Self-Selection
STEPPER Start frames are designed for professional fitting rather than self-selection. Correctly fitted frames are essential for proper lens positioning, especially with myopia management lenses. Poorly fitted frames can negate the lenses’ effectiveness and even accelerate myopic progression.
Each frame is injection-moulded to meet exacting requirements for facial parameters, such as bridge profile, frame wrap, and pantoscopic angle. Adjustable lengths address common issues with traditional children’s frames, ensuring comfort and usability.
Real-Life Impact
Mr Reeve shared a touching story about a 23-year-old with Down syndrome who was fitted with a STEPPER Start frame. “It was the first properly fitting frame he’d ever worn. He was so happy with his vision and the look of the frame that he wouldn’t take it off. His mother was moved to tears.”
Expanding Horizons
The new STEPPER Start collection, designed in collaboration with Dr Thompson, includes variations for different facial characteristics and is suitable for ages 8–14. New titanium options for older children maintain essential fitting principles while offering more mature, stylish designs.
With STEPPER Start, science leads the way, proving that function and form can harmoniously serve the wearer’s needs.
