The Save Sight Institute is encouraging eye care professionals to refer their young patients to Eye Empower, a new virtual peer support group specifically designed for 12 to 25-year-olds living with or experiencing the impacts of vision-related conditions and/or impairments.
This innovative programme is led by Salonee Goyal-Devaraj and Simran Goyal, two young professionals who are passionate about ensuring people who live with differing abilities have access to equal opportunities as their able-sighted peers.
The peer group format offers young people the opportunity to connect with others who understand their experiences firsthand
Eye Empower addresses a critical gap in support for young people navigating the challenges of living with vision impairments during key developmental years when peer relationships and identity are especially important. The peer group format offers young people the opportunity to connect with others who understand their experiences firsthand.
The virtual format makes the service accessible to participants across geographical boundaries, ensuring no young person is excluded due to location.
Sharing Personal Experiences
In the upcoming session, a panel of youth and young adults with vision-related conditions and/or impairments will share their personal experiences navigating key life transitions, including those related to education and career. The panel discussion will focus on what it means to lead without limits, providing inspiration and practical insights for participants facing similar challenges.
For optometrists and ophthalmologists, Eye Empower represents a valuable resource to complement clinical care. By referring young patients to this programme, eye care professionals can ensure their patients receive holistic support that addresses not only their visual health needs but also their psychosocial wellbeing and future aspirations.
