Sydney Ophthalmologist Receives King’s Birthday Honour

Sydney ophthalmologist Dr Michael Steiner has been honoured in the 2025 King’s Birthday List, with an appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Dr Steiner was recognised for significant services to medicine in the field of ophthalmology as a surgeon, and to professional associations.

Dr Michael Steiner has over 40 years’ experience in eye surgery with a particular interest in glaucoma and laser refractive surgery. He is a medico legal expert.

After graduating in Medicine from Sydney University in 1970 and becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists (RACO), he was appointed to the position of Honorary Secretary of the College in 1976.

RACO merged with the Ophthalmological Society of New Zealand in 1997 becoming the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) and Dr Steiner went on to hold many positions with the new organisation, including President from 1999–2000, and Vice-President in 1997.

He was President of Australian Medical Association (AMA) NSW 2010–2012, and President of the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists (ASO) from 2014–2013.

Dr Steiner is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of the United Kingdom and a member of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress. He has been involved in the organisation of many scientific congresses for RANZCO and has been the Chairman of annual Scientific Congresses at both State and National level.

Dr Steiner was recognised for significant services to medicine in the field of ophthalmology as a surgeon, and to professional associations.

Other Honours

Also recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List was Professor Corbett Marshall Lyon who became an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), for distinguished service to architecture, to the arts as a benefactor and administrator, and to tertiary education. Among his many roles, he has been an expert advisor to the Arts Reference Group at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne since 2015.

Mr Charles Macek was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to corporate governance, and to the financial services industry. He was a Trustee of the Kathleen and Lloyd Ansell Ophthalmology Foundation between 1994–2015.

Emeritus Professor John Carver received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for services to science in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. He is a member of the International Society for Eye Research. His work investigates peptides and proteins, and the structure and unfolding of eye lens crystallin proteins are a major interest.

Also receiving an OAM was Ms Judith Dikstein for service to the law, and to community health. She served as a Community Member of the Optometry Board of Australia, 2009–2012.
