A purpose-built private hospital dedicated exclusively to ophthalmology has commenced operations in southern Sydney, marking a significant milestone for specialised eye care in the region.
Southern Sydney Private Hospital (SSPH) undertook its first surgical procedure on 28 April 2025, bringing a new level of ophthalmic expertise and patient-centred care to Miranda and surrounding areas. The facility, established by four experienced ophthalmologists, represents a two-year project culminating in a state-of-the-art surgical centre independent of corporate hospital groups.
The founding directors – Professor Mitchel Lawlor, Dr Alexander Hamilton, Dr Robert McDonald and Dr Brighu Swamy – have created the hospital in the same building as their consulting practice, enabling a seamless and convenient patient experience. The facility is strategically located just 400 metres from Miranda train station and opposite Westfield shopping centre.
“Following extensive surgical experience at various hospitals, we set out to establish a hospital that is primarily centred around patient experience and quality care,” the directors said in a statement. “SSPH operates with a patient-focussed care model at the forefront, not governed or influenced by financial objectives typical of corporately run hospitals.”
Purpose Built Surgeries, Overnight Facility
The facility features two fully equipped operating theatres, four first-stage recovery beds, eight recliners, and one overnight bed, making it the only ophthalmic-focussed hospital in the area offering overnight accommodation. This boutique single-room overnight facility addresses a significant gap for patients requiring extended care in Miranda and surrounding regions.
SSPH distinguishes itself through several features. The hospital is licensed to treat patients from two years of age, providing a strong competitive edge to set SSPH apart, and maintains the highest standards set by the Clinical Excellence Commission – equivalent to larger overnight hospitals rather than day facilities. The facility has achieved accreditation from the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards.
Advanced technology underpins the hospital’s clinical capabilities. The purpose-built theatres feature ceiling-mounted Lumera 700 microscopes and Callisto Eye systems by Carl Zeiss, using precision-based imagery for accurate intraocular lens positioning and optimised post-operative outcomes. The facility is also introducing Alcon’s latest phaco machine, the Unity, and offers collagen cross-linking with the Glaukos Avedro platform.
A purpose-built on-site sterilisation department, designed to meet current regulatory requirements, ensures optimal infection control and prevention standards.
Experience and Reach
The hospital’s medical team comprises highly experienced ophthalmology-trained staff, with nursing personnel skilled in both adult and paediatric anaesthetics and high-risk recovery. Approximately 90% of surgical volume derives from medical referrals and word-of-mouth recommendations, reflecting the strong reputation of the founding surgeons within the medical community.
SSPH proudly includes Visiting Medical Officers include Dr Dov Hersh, Dr Daya Sharma, Dr Eamonn Fahy, Dr John Leaney and Dr Megha Kaushik expanding the breadth of expertise available to patients.
SSPH currently serves patients throughout Sydney metropolitan areas, extending south to Wollongong and beyond to regional areas. The hospital offers the full spectrum of ophthalmic procedures while maintaining its boutique service model and warm, personalised approach to patient care.
The facility provides flexible admission processes, including in-person, telephone and online options, with direct patient access to all staff members. Full disability access, onsite parking and lift facilities ensure accessibility for all patients.
SSPH is excited to continue to service the community and its referrers by growing it volume and catchment of patients and surgeons. To date, patients have been exceedingly happy with the service and care provided, an approach well-deserved by all patients!
