Dr David Squirrell, a consultant ophthalmologist, passed away on 10 November 2025 after an accident in Queensland.
Dr Squirrell graduated from Sheffield Medical School in the UK in 1995 and completing his general ophthalmology training in South Yorkshire before embarking on a series of UK and overseas sub-specialty fellowships in the field of retinal disease.
Described by many patients as a “wonderful” eye doctor, Dr Squirrell is survived by his wife Judy and children Emily, Jonathon and Daniel
On completion of a fellowship in Auckland in 2005, he returned to the UK to take up an appointment at one of the largest National Health Service teaching hospital trusts in the UK, a post he held for three years.
In 2009 he returned to New Zealand with his family to take up the appointment of clinical lead of the medical retinal services at Greenlane Hospital co-ordinating delivery of anti-VEGF treatment. Additionally, he became the Clinical lead for Waitemata’s Ophthalmology services and the national Diabetic Eye Screening Program. He later moved to Queensland.
Dr Squirrell and his family moved to Queensland in late 2023, where he worked at the Caloundra Hospital, part of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
Described by many patients as a “wonderful” eye doctor, Dr Squirrell is survived by his wife Judy and children Emily, Jonathon and Daniel.
