WAVE 26: 21-22 March 2026

WAVE – the annual optometry conference hosted by Optometry Western Australia – returns in Fremantle in March.

Speakers include Associate Professor Zhichao Wu, a Principal Research Fellow and Head of Clinical Biomarkers Research at the Centre for Eye Research Australia, and Principal Fellow at the Department of Surgery (in Ophthalmology) at the University of Melbourne. Assoc Prof Wu will provide updates on clinical management of geographic atrophy and artificial intelligence in eye care.

Optometrist Jillian Campbell will speak on ‘Interesting contact lens cases’ and interpreting corneal topography. Dr Tom Cunneen, a consultant ophthalmologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, will speak on ‘Ocular lumps and bumps’ as well as ‘Red eye dilemmas’, while Senior Lecturer Christine Nearchou (University of Melbourne) will speak on paediatric optometry.

Glaucoma will be covered by optometrist Graham Lakkis (University of Melbourne) and Dr Geoffrey Chan (University of Western Australia).

Behavioural optometrist Steve Leslie will speak on concussion-related vision symptoms and dysfunctions; Dr Rohan Hughes (Queensland University of Technology) will speak on myopia management, and ophthalmologist Dr Charlotte McKnight (St John of God Clinic, Subiaco) will speak on therapeutics.

Finally, Dr McKnight and Mark Lucey, a clinician from Eye Health Centre of Western Australia, will speak on cosmetics and eye health, and dry eye management using targeted light and energy therapies.

Running alongside the optometry program, on the Saturday of WAVE, will be two dispenser workshops hosted by Optical Dispensers Australia.
