Improved Outcomes with Neurolens: Study

A new study has found that patients wearing Neurolens with contoured prism technology have reported significant improvements in headaches, tired eyes, and neck and shoulder stiffness.

The study was conducted by Dr Sumeer Singh, director of clinical affairs at Newton, which makes Neurolens.1

Dr Singh analysed 96,745 patient records from practices offering Neurolens: 4,807 from patients prescribed Neurolens, 1,293 from patients prescribed conventional prism lenses, and 90,645 controls not prescribed prism. To be included in the study, patients had to not be wearing prism lenses at baseline.

Compared with patients wearing conventional prism lenses, those wearing Neurolens reported a 28% greater improvement in overall questionnaire score at the second visit

At a baseline visit and a later visit, patients completed a questionnaire rating their overall symptom scores and the severity of symptoms such as headaches, neck and shoulder pain and stiffness, and tired eyes.

Compared with patients wearing conventional prism lenses, those wearing Neurolens reported a 28% greater improvement in overall questionnaire score at the second visit.

The study found that when compared with patients prescribed conventional prism lenses, those wearing Neurolens also reported:

  • 53% greater improvement in neck and shoulder stiffness,
  • 41% greater improvement in headache symptoms, and
  • 27% greater improvement in tired eyes.

Dr Singh said although a key limitation of the study was its retrospective design, “nevertheless, the large real-world dataset provides meaningful clinical insight”.

“These findings suggest that the contoured prism design of Neurolens may offer enhanced therapeutic benefit beyond that achievable with traditional conventional prism correction.

“Based on the findings of this large real-world analysis, clinicians may consider Neurolens as a treatment option for patients presenting with symptoms such as headache and visual discomfort. Given the greater symptom improvement observed relative to conventional prism correction, Neurolens may be particularly useful for patients who continue to experience symptoms with conventional optical approaches,” Dr Singh concluded.
