mivision Issue 224 July 2026

This year National Diabetes Week runs from 12–18 July, providing an opportunity for eye care professionals to remind patients living with diabetes of the need for regular eye examinations.

To support you in caring for these patients,

Dr Jessica Xiong and Professor Samantha Fraser-Bell have contributed a comprehensive article about new and evolving approaches to managing diabetic eye disease. Additionally, Dr Alexander Tan has focused on proliferative diabetic retinopathy – the most advanced and visually devastating stage of diabetic eye disease – stressing the critical role of optometrists as primary screeners and collaborative care partners in managing these patients. Both of these articles are CPD accredited, and of course, there is more: one on collaborative care for patients with age-related macular degeneration, and another on boosting compliance in contact lens wear.

Speaking of boosting, Michelle Hauschild builds on an article on vision correction for athletes that she wrote for our June issue with another exploring sports vision training. Optometrists and ophthalmologists proffer performance enhancing strategies for both elite athletes and ‘weekend warriors’… who needs the hormone therapies, longevity substances, and peptides used by athletes in the Enhanced Games when it’s possible to achieve ‘supernormal vision’ with eye exercise!

As we move into a new financial year, many practice owners may be considering whether it’s time to buy, rent or renovate a practice. Avant Finance provides a framework to help you think through your options clearly. And if you do decide to rent, read on as our second finance article provides general advice from Burkes Lawyers that may help you secure the right terms.

O-SHOW is just around the corner, taking place in Melbourne from 16–17 August. To help you prepare, we have put together a directory of key device companies and service providers who will be exhibiting. Be sure to plan ahead to make the most of this opportunity to find out about the latest products and services available to build your practice.

Enjoy this issue!
