Professor Stephanie Watson OAM FARVO has been announced as the new Director of the Save Sight Institute in Sydney.
Prof Watson is currently Professor and Head of Ophthalmology and the Corneal Research Group in Sydney Medical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, and Head of the Corneal Unit at Sydney Eye Hospital.
She is also a practising corneal surgeon at the Sydney Eye Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospitals.
A highly respected clinician‑scientist, Prof Watson is internationally recognised for her ground‑breaking research in corneal therapies. In recognition of her contributions to ophthalmology, she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2022.
Announcing the news, the Save Sight Institute said Prof Watson would “lead the strategic direction of the Save Sight Institute, building on its strong foundations in research excellence in ophthalmology, clinical translation and community impact in vision preservation and restoration, while further strengthening its national and international profile”.
Prof Watson succeeds Professor Peter McCluskey AO, who has been the Institute’s Director for the past 17 years.
“Under his leadership, the Institute became one of the Faculty of Medicine and Health’s six flagship research centres, reflecting its growing impact and reputation,” the Institute said.
