The Australasian College of Behavioural Optometry (ACBO) is hosting a four-part seminar series exploring the relationship between vision and literacy acquisition.
While recognising that vision plays an important role in reading, understanding exactly how it contributes to reading performance can be both complex and controversial, ACBO said.
It said the field is often characterised by competing theories, differing perspectives. and unanswered questions.
‘Visual Aspects of Reading’ is a four-part seminar series drawing on current research, clinical observations. and behavioural optometry principles. The series examines how visual function influences reading and learning, while seeking to build a common framework for understanding optometry’s role in supporting individuals with reading difficulties.
The seminars, to be presented by optometrist and peer educator Meredith Graham BApp Sc Optom (Hons) FACBO, reflect her years of research, clinical experience and a passion for helping individuals reach their potential through improved visual function.
Throughout the four sessions, participants will explore key theories of reading development, including phonological and visual perspectives, and consider how these approaches can coexist rather than compete. The sessions will challenge traditional assumptions, encourage critical thinking, and provide attendees with a broader understanding of how visual function may influence human performance and reading outcomes.
ACBO said the series builds on each week’s learning. Live attendance is recommended but participants receive access to the recording for seven days as a catch-up resource only. ACBO has applied to Optometry Australia’s Institute of Excellence for course accreditation.
Who Should Attend?
Visual Aspects of Reading is aimed at vision care professionals and allied health professionals with an interest in reading, learning, and human performance. Membership of ACBO is not a requirement to attend, however members do receive a discounted registration rate.
