An Advanced Diploma in Opticianry, developed by the Academy of Advanced Ophthalmic Optics (AAOO), will soon be available for opticians in New Zealand.
The three-year, full-time program, which was announced at the Association of Dispensing Opticians of New Zealand (ADONZ) conference, is being designed to prepare graduates for registration within the New Zealand Dispensing Optician scope of practice.
AAOO submitted its proposal to the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board (ODOB) earlier this year and is working through the relevant New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) processes. The program is subject to ODOB accreditation and NZQA approval.
The program is supported by ADONZ and its education division, OptiBlocks. AAOO and OptiBlocks share the goal of creating a registrable qualification for New Zealand dispensing opticians, focused on expanding practice and cultural awareness to meet the country’s eye care needs now and into the future.

AAOO Founder and Academic Director Dr Grant Hannaford said the program has been designed to combine a strong foundation in ophthalmic optics with the practical skills dispensing opticians use every day.
“Optical dispensing has changed enormously. Contemporary lens designs, biometric measurement, digital centration, complex prescriptions and highly individualised optical systems require practitioners to understand not simply what to dispense, but why an optical solution behaves the way it does,” said Dr Hannaford.
“The objective of the Diploma is to connect optical theory directly with what happens in the dispensing environment.”
Bridging Theory and Practice
The curriculum spans optical physics, geometrical and ophthalmic optics, spectacle lens and frame technology, dispensing procedures, progressive lens design, occupational vision, contact lens theory, clinical instrumentation, and ocular anatomy, physiology and pathology awareness.
A central focus will be visualising optical effects and translating mathematical concepts into clinically meaningful information. Rather than treating optics as an abstract mathematical subject, students will explore how changes in lens power, position, tilt, wrap, vertex distance and centration alter the optical system experienced by the wearer.
The program will be delivered through a blended model. Online modules and live virtual tutorials will allow students anywhere in New Zealand to take part, combined with practical laboratory workshops, industry-based training and structured workplace learning. Students will work in an optical practice or approved placement throughout their studies, maintaining logbooks and completing supervised dispensing activities. OptiBlocks will deliver workshops and graded practical assessments.
Practical teaching is proposed at the University of Auckland School of Optometry and Vision Science, with industry-based training at Essilor New Zealand and Carl Zeiss (N.Z.) Ltd.
Built for New Zealand Practice
“Dispensing opticians occupy an increasingly important position between the prescription, the ophthalmic lens, and the final visual experience of the patient,” Dr Hannaford said. “As lens technology grows more sophisticated, the ability to critically assess a lens design, understand its limitations and identify the source of a patient’s difficulty matters more than ever.”
Professional communication, ethics, professionalism, cultural awareness, and New Zealand legislation and regulatory requirements are integrated throughout the program rather than taught as standalone topics.
Enrolments will open once accreditation and approval processes are complete. Further details regarding programme structure, enrolment and commencement will be announced as these processes advance.
