Visual Training May Help IOL Neuroadaptation

Patients who underwent perceptual vision training after implantation with multifocal intraocular lenses (MF IOLs) showed improvements in neuroadaptation, according to a new study. 

Neuroadaptation is the process by which the brain learns to interpret and adjust to new visual information, as happens after cataract surgery with implantation of multifocal or presbyopia-correcting IOLs. 

This study, published in Eye,1 enrolled 28 patients. Twenty patients underwent perceptual training, while eight served as a control group. The training included three approaches. Visual Function Index 14 (VF-14) was used to assess visual function before and after training. A correlation was observed between proficiency at each stage and VF-14 scores. 

Patients who underwent perceptual training showed significant improvement in VF-14 scores compared to the control group. VF-14 scores in the training group were significantly higher after six weeks of training compared to one-month post-surgery.
