Boroondara Day Surgery has reached a significant milestone, recently treating its 1,000th patient since opening its doors just two years ago. The milestone procedure was performed by ophthalmologist Dr Jennifer Gaskin, reflecting the centre’s steady growth in delivering specialist ophthalmic day surgery services.
Director of Nursing (DON) Margarette Cortez described the moment as a meaningful achievement.
“I’m so proud of what we have achieved in two years,” she said. “Being able to care for 1,000 patients is a reflection of the progress we’ve made as an ophthalmic day surgery site.”
Ms Cortez credits much of Boroondara Day Surgery’s development to the people behind the scenes.
“Building a strong team with the right skills and experience is essential to deliver an exceptional service – and that’s been our priority from day one. Our team is continuously growing and learning. We are adaptable to changes and have a positive attitude towards embracing new technologies and processes.
“Every facility is different, but I think what stands out here are the positive attitudes and the way people treat one another. There’s a genuine sense of respect and cooperation between staff, patients, visiting doctors, and even suppliers. And feedback from the surgeons and patients suggests that we’ve got it right.”
Dr Gaskin, who consults at Armadale Eye Clinic and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, is one such surgeon who speaks positively about her experience operating at Boroondara Day Surgery. “I enjoy working with the BDS team, and it’s so great to see how much they care for the patients,” Dr Gaskin said.
Another visiting medical officer (VMO) said, “Margarette is an excellent DON and has an outstanding team of nurses working under her. My patients often comment on what a great environment the theatre was and how well the staff worked together.”
Moments That Matter
Out of the 1,000 patients, some moments do stand out. Ms Cortez recalls a particular phone call with an extremely anxious patient.
“She was so anxious about her procedure that she was crying. I spent some time talking to her and was able to calm things down. She just needed some reassurance and to have someone listen to her concerns. The patient later turned up for surgery with a bouquet of flowers as a thank you.
“These types of moments have a lasting impact – for the patient and the staff.”
