The 2026 SILMO Academy, to be held in Bali for the first time, will bring together international experts from the eye health sector to tackle big picture topics including patient-centred care, healthy aging, and future technologies.
Among the speakers are Australia’s Dr Marianne Coleman, Professor Eric Papas, Dr Grant Hannaford, and Thao Hannaford and New Zealand’s Stephen Caunter and Jason Dhana.

International researchers, educators, and practitioners speaking at the Academy include Dr Cindy Tromans (World Council of Optometry President), Gabrielle Janssen (European Council of Optometry and Optics President), Professor Rupert Bourne and Professor David Elliott from the United Kingdom, and Professor Weizhong Lan from China.

Supported by numerous regional professional associations, presentations will be structured around five thematic sessions:
- Putting people at the heart of professional practice: – patient-centred care and evolving professional practices,
- Healthy aging and presbyopia: World Health Organization’s work plan, Global Vision Database and demographic challenges,
- Enhancing competitiveness in professional practice: clinical innovation and differentiation,
- Light management and myopia: the role of light in refractive development, and
- Future advances in optometry and optics: artificial intelligence, smart eyewear and med-tech transformation
